I had my 6 year old niece with me and she ensured she had a great time, braided her hair and got her to do arts and crafts. She genuinely cares about the guest. Emma also gave me a ride to the local grocery store to get some things, Sully was a gentleman as well, he gave us a ride over to the lobster shack, Mark the manager is a five star guy, you can tell her cares about his staff and also his guest at the marina that right there makes this place a 10! Our boys spend the summer crabbing, fishing, swimming, boating, playing basketball/bocci and we have made so many amazing friendships with people on our dock. They also have a great dog park that our old lab loves to go rip around in, making dog friends as well. The only regret we have is not getting into boating sooner and not buying a boat that we can sleep on so we don’t have to leave every night. My buddy rents boats here and I tagged along with my Gkid in tow. I ended up taking out the main gate after following my buddy’s car and mistakenly thinking the kid at the gate was also waving me through as well. After the gate comes down on my car, I see the warning sign that states the gate comes down after each car goes through! Well, damn! The kid then tells me he was waving at me to stop. Not his fault as his additional jobs with the boat rental company is to let renters (and their guests) into the restricted area and to open the bathrooms near the front entrance when they call him via phone. Then he has to rush back to the docks where there are 8-9 other boats he has to service for other renters. They need to come up with a better system imo as it’s a lot for one person. And why not issue key fobs for the bathroom and entrance gate so the staff doesn’t have to stop what they are doing with the boats and personally drive their car to let you in or go to the bathroom. At least the bathrooms were clean and stocked. 5 Stars for the hard working boat rental crew and 4 Stars for the unnecessary staff runaround. The service was great! The young lady who helped us out was very polite and knowledgeable about the water and the area! It was about 100° out that day, but she remained happy and helpful. Only thing I did not like was the price of oil. It was $55 dollars for a gallon, which doesn't even cost me $30 at other locations. I would've bought 3 gallons but not at that rate! Overall though it's a beautiful marina and is very conveniently located just inside Clinton harbor. We were transients, scheduled to stay one night at the marina to continue our journey home to FL. During the night my wife fell inside our boat and seriously injured herself. The staff and owners at the marina loaned us their car for a few hours, helped us find a hospital and allowed us to stay as long as needed for her recovery. We ended up being there for 3 Weeks while they were closing the marina! They never hesitated in letting us stay and made us feel like family! Michelle is the greatest! She helped us with everything, mail, supplies, advice, and kindness when needed the most. We needed work done to the boat and we used their staff to coordinate. The work was first rate and we could not be happier. The marina is clean, walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants. The marine store is well stocked and had most of the parts I needed in stock and if not they could order them. We will be back as they turned a horrible situation into a true testament of kindness and professionalism that made us loyal clients for life. Thank you Mr. Shapiro and staff! Experience Driven. # Cedar Island Marina Clinton, CT ## A Family-Owned Marina Since 1974 Cedar Island Marina has been a cornerstone of boating on Long Island Sound since 1974, when the Jeff Shapiro purchased it at the age of 22. He immediately began transforming and expanding it into a full-service marina in Clinton, Connecticut. What started as a small marina with only one office has grown into one of the largest and most amenity-rich marinas in Connecticut. It was one of the first marinas in Connecticut to have a pool onsite and was the first marina in Connecticut to have a Dog Park. Through decades of steady reinvestment, careful planning, and a strong commitment to customer experience, Cedar Island Marina has evolved into a premier destination for seasonal boaters, transient visitors, and families seeking a true boating community along the Connecticut shoreline. While Cedar Island Marina has an incredibly diverse range of customers, it prides itself on being “The Family Boating Resort”. Today, Cedar Island Marina is owned and operated by Jeff and his son Kris Shapiro, who continue the family’s long-standing tradition of hands-on management and continuous improvement. Both Jeff and Kris Shapiro oversee marina operations, infrastructure, and long-term development, bringing decades of experience in marina management, dredging, and waterfront operations. They guide the business’s strategic direction and customer experience, ensuring that Cedar Island Marina remains both professionally operated and family-focused. Their leadership reflects a philosophy that has guided the marina for generations: reinvest in the property, prioritize service, and create a place where boaters join a community that makes them want to return year after year. Over the years, significant capital improvements, including new docks, bulkheads, buildings, and customer amenities, have helped establish Cedar Island Marina as one of the most modern and well-maintained marinas on the Connecticut shoreline. Environmental stewardship has also been central to Cedar Island Marina’s story. The marina has partnered with research institutions and environmental organizations, including Save the Sound, to better understand and protect Long Island Sound. Cedar Island Marina previously hosted a marine research laboratory that studied how marina environments can support marine life, helping demonstrate that well-managed marinas can coexist with healthy coastal ecosystems. The Cedar Island Marina Research Laboratory produced and published numerous academic studies on marina ecosystems and marine life in Long Island Sound. As a family run marina, we take pride in creating an environment that feels more personal and less corporate. Our team brings extensive hands-on experience across dock operations, service, storage, brokerage, and guest services. Whether you’re new to boating or a seasoned captain, you can expect knowledgeable guidance, reliable support, and a consistent, well-run experience. We place a strong emphasis on relationships. Over time, our staff comes to understand each customer’s vessel, preferences, and boating style, creating a level of familiarity and service that’s hard to replicate. #### Jeffrey Shapiro President and Owner Jeff purchased Cedar Island Marina in 1974 at the age of 22 after graduating college. When the marina was originally purchased, it was less than a third the size of what it is now. Throughout the almost four decades that Jeff has been the sole owner and operator of Cedar Island Marina, he has transformed it from a small yard with a few docks to one of the largest full service marinas in Connecticut. He started the service department, expanded the marina substantially, installed the pool, hot tub, snack bar, playground facilities, marine biology research lab, bathrooms, tripled the size of the restaurant, and much more. Since the beginning of his ownership, Jeff has been very involved in marine biology and the marine environment. He has always had a strong desire to study the symbiotic relationship marinas and docks have with the environment. In 1986 Jeff founded the Cedar Island Marina Research Lab, which in participation with local universities such as Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut, has conducted hundreds of ecological and biological studies of the area, including many studies that have been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Jeff was one of the first in Connecticut to demonstrably show that marinas do not have a negative impact on the environment. In fact, there are many more species of plant and animal life under our docks than in the surrounding mudflats. Our docks actually act as an artificial reef. In 1996 the US Environmental Protection Agency cited Cedar Island Marina as one of the 25 most environmentally conscious marinas in the country and in 1999 the CT Dept. of Environmental Protection awarded the Green Circle Award for Environmental Contributions. Jeff is an avid boater. He holds a 100 ton Near-Coastal USCG Master’s License. Working from the bottom-up, Kris started as a dock hand at the fuel dock dispensing fuel, doing pump-outs (before it was self-service), and docking boats. Over time, Kris became more involved in both the yard work and the financial end of business until he was promoted to General Manager in 2012. Currently, Kris runs all operations for the marina. He is in charge of hiring, training, and managing over 50 staff both full-time and seasonal. Kris’ main focus is budgeting and overseeing marina improvements and modernization. During the winter he helps to build and repair docks and operates the hydraulic dredge that is used to dredge the marina basin. In addition he is in charge of creating and implementing Cedar Island Marina’s marketing plan across varied platforms including running all social media accounts, website optimization, and SEO. Kris also works to implement and update safety protocols and policies. Kris graduated Ithaca College in 2009 with degrees in Business Administration and Philosophy. He then got his M.B.A. from Quinnipiac University in 2012. He holds a 100 ton Near-Coastal USCG Master’s License. He is also a Public Notary and provides free Notary services to all customers. In January of 2019, Kris was awarded the status of Certified Marina Manager from the International Marina Institute. He is one of the youngest ever to have received this degree. In early 2020, Kris was awarded the “Young Leader Award” from Marina Dockage Magazine. This award honored 12 other leaders in the Marina Industry across the United States under 40 years old. #### Vincenzo DeFrancesco General Manager Vinnie started working at Cedar Island Marina as a dockhand in high school. Shortly after, he was promoted to Assistant Dockmaster where he assisted Marc with running the fuel dock and assisting customers. After graduating college, he joined the marina full time as the marina’s General Manager. Vinnie oversees all operations of the marina. He is in charge of hiring, training and managing all full-time and seasonal employees. In the offseason, he assists in the hauling/launching of boats and slip rentals. He also takes an active role in various projects and business development opportunities for the marina. He started working as a maintenance employee and worked his way up to Dockmaster. Now, both Marc and Vinnie jointly oversee operations at the fuel dock. Marc also manages and assigns duty to the summer staff. During the off season, Marc is a history teacher at Wheeler Middle School in North Stonington teaching 8th grade students. He has been a teacher for over 20 years. Marc is an extremely active individual and is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. He is the high school cross country coach, a class advisor, and is the advisor to the middle school year book. Marc’s interpersonal and communication skills are second to none and have proven to be a valuable asset amongst our staff. During his spare time, you might find him boating, antiquing, or running. #### Michelle Riccio Office Manager Michelle has worked at Cedar Island Marina since 1983. She is very knowledgeable about all departments of the marina and can either help or direct customers to the right person to serve all customers boating needs. She also assists in customers concierge needs as she is also familiar with most of the services available locally including transportation, lodging, restaurant, shopping, and local sights. Michelle is in charge of a vast amount of the customer’s experience. She works with new customers to find the right slips for them based on boat size, type, dock preference, and most importantly- neighbors! This helps to ensure that our customers’ experience is positive. Michelle is also in charge of payroll, billing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Martin-Hartnett Service Representative Lynn communicates directly with customers to insure their individual needs are met to the highest standard. Lynn is the type of person that customers feel confident talking to both formally and informally about boating. #### Timothy J. Connell Head Painter and Repairmen Tim is a marine specialist in Awlgrip, Alexseal, Interprotect barrier system gelcoat, and refinishing/varnish work. He attends painting seminars all over the country to make sure that we are on the cutting edge of the industry. He is an expert craftsman in fiberglass applications and repairs. He assists in shrink wrapping, dredging, running gear repair, hauling and launching, dock repair/building, and mast stepping. Before finding his home at Cedar Island Marina, he was employed at many different local marinas and owned his own business as well. Experience Driven. # Cedar Island Marina Clinton, CT ## The History of Clinton The history of Clinton begins long before European settlement, with the Indigenous Hammonasset people who lived along the shoreline and made use of the area’s natural resources. The name “Hammonasset,” meaning “where we dig holes in the ground,” reflects their practice of harvesting shellfish along the coast. These early inhabitants followed seasonal patterns, relying on the land and sea for survival. European settlers arrived in the mid-1600s, establishing farming and fishing communities along the coast. The area that is now Clinton was originally part of the town of Killingworth, founded in 1663. Life for these early settlers centered on agriculture, small-scale trade, and close ties to the surrounding waters. During this early period, the town also played a small but significant role in the founding of Yale University. In 1701, when the area was still part of Killingworth, the Collegiate School held its earliest classes in the home of its first rector, Abraham Pierson. With no formal campus, Pierson taught a small group of students classical studies, theology, and philosophy from his home. Although the original structure no longer exists, the site is recognized locally, linking Clinton to the earliest days of Yale before the school moved to New Haven in 1716. Some of these ships, known as “brownstoners,” carried Portland brownstone to markets along the Connecticut River and beyond. In his will, he left funds to support education, which led to the establishment of The Morgan School which continues to serve Clinton students today. As the 1800s progressed, Clinton remained a small but active town with a mixed economy of agriculture, maritime trade, and local industry. Businesses like Pond’s Extract, which used locally grown witch hazel, connected Clinton to a growing national market. The arrival of the railroad in the 19th century brought new opportunities, making the shoreline more accessible and helping to establish Clinton as a summer destination. Visitors were drawn to its beaches, fresh air, and coastal setting, leading to the development of hotels, cottages, and seasonal homes along the shore. By the early 20th century, Clinton began to transition from a seasonal resort area into a more permanent, year-round community. Local businesses expanded, schools developed, and civic institutions grew stronger. Neighborhoods that were once filled with summer visitors gradually became home to full-time residents. Despite these changes, the town has held onto much of its historic character, with a strong connection to its past still visible today. Today, Clinton’s history can be seen in its harbor, along the Indian River, and throughout its shoreline and historic areas. From 1987 until the end of 2022, the marina operated an onsite marine research laboratory where scientists, universities, and environmental organizations conducted studies on water quality, marine habitats, fish populations, and shellfish growth in Clinton Harbor and Long Island Sound. These efforts help rebuild eelgrass habitat and support the long-term health of the coastal ecosystem. . ### Did You Know? **Research conducted at Cedar Island Marina found that the waters beneath marina docks supported an abundance of marine life, in most cases exceeding nearby open areas outside the marina.** During studies conducted through the Cedar Island Marina Research Laboratory, scientists observed that the floating docks created sheltered conditions that reduced wave action, provided structure, and encouraged the growth of shellfish and other organisms. These conditions attracted juvenile fish and created natural nursery habitat within the marina basin.
